How Can I Tell If My Child Has a Cavity?

Children do not always tell us when something feels wrong—and early cavities may cause no pain at all. That is why knowing what to look for can help parents catch tooth decay before it becomes a bigger problem.

Signs Parents Should Watch For

Look closely at your child’s teeth while helping them brush. Possible signs of a cavity include:

  • Chalky white spots near the gumline
  • Brown or black spots on a tooth
  • A visible hole or chipped-looking area
  • Sensitivity to cold, hot or sweet foods
  • Tooth pain, especially while chewing
  • Avoiding food or chewing on only one side
  • Persistent bad breath despite brushing
  • Irritability, interrupted sleep or unexplained mouth discomfort

In babies and toddlers, dental pain can sometimes be mistaken for teething. Your child may rub their cheek, resist brushing or become unusually fussy during meals.

When to Call a Dentist

Schedule a dental examination if you notice any of these changes—even if your child is not complaining. A dentist can identify early decay that may not be visible at home. Early treatment is usually simpler and more comfortable.

Facial swelling, fever, severe pain, a swollen gum or a pimple-like bump near a tooth may indicate an infection and should be evaluated promptly. Difficulty breathing or swallowing requires emergency medical care.

Helping Prevent Cavities

Brush your child’s teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss wherever teeth touch and limit frequent sugary snacks and drinks. Regular dental visits are important because baby teeth help children eat, speak and guide their permanent teeth into place. The American Dental Association explains that cavities develop when acids produced by plaque bacteria repeatedly attack tooth enamel.
